This weekend I went for another seaside walk with my camera and sketchbook, this time to Mundesley in North Norfolk. It was a cold and overcast day, with intermittent rain - not the best for photography! Waves crashing onto the beach. © C L Grasby, 2018. View along the beach. © C L Grasby, 2018. This weekend I visited Southwold Pier to take some photos - seaside spots like this are great as the weather gets colder, as it is generally quite quiet and great for some creative reflections... I love experimenting and drawing with different mediums, but quite often enjoy drawing with an everyday ballpoint pen! This started as a doodle in my sketchbook, and is based on my own reference photos of a binturong that I'd seen at Colchester Zoo.
I quite often start drawings and then put them to one side for a while before going back and finishing them. I started this drawing earlier this year at a local pastels workshop, using my own reference photos that I'd taken of a black swan cygnet in Dawlish in 2017.
The nights have been drawing in earlier but have brought with them some amazing sunsets. These were both taken in the last week, on separate occasions.
Most of the stuff in my sketchbooks are scribbles for ideas and inspirations, but quite often I’ll find something will start as a doodle or a rough sketch, then evolve into a 'proper' drawing! This was based on a photo and some sketches from a recent Colchester Zoo visit. I used Windsor and Newton Indian … Continue reading Doodling with a dip pen…
With the nights drawing in a lot quicker and the leaves still falling from the trees, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to get a few long exposure shots along Norwich’s river and of the Cathedral with the lights on!
I love seeing Norwich's annual firework display, the 'Big Boom'. One of my favourite places to view it is on Mousehold Heath, near Café Britannia, as it has a fabulous view overlooking the city. There were a lot of people out on the heath this year, and it was quite difficult to get clear shots, but … Continue reading Norwich’s ‘Big Boom’
I had to wait to share this as it was a gift for a friend's birthday! This was drawn using my dip pen and Indian ink, drawing inspiration from a few photographs on Pixabay, and I built up the tones gradually using watercolours. It took quite a bit of building up to get to the … Continue reading Stonehenge, pen and watercolours
At the weekend I joined some friends to do some winter boat maintenance in Brightlingsea, Essex. It's been a few years since I last visited the area, and I was surprised at how much it had changed (or that I'd forgotten!). I had a couple of opportunities to pop out with my camera, and although … Continue reading High Tide at Brightlingsea
