I had a few opportunities to get out and about with my camera over the Christmas period, including another photographic wander with a local group, and a few photos of Winter Solstice, which have been included in a separate post.
I celebrated Yule with my housemate by observing Winter Solstice this year, and of course took a range of photographs to document the occasion. Later in the evening, Jon observed a ritual, which he was happy for me to photograph!
Since recently upgrading my camera, I have looked more at learning how to get the best from my kit and learning some of the more technical specifications and functions that are involved in photography... As part of this I attended a 'Getting Started With Your DSLR' workshop at my local camera showroom. As someone who … Continue reading Back to Basics…getting to know my camera…
While doing some research for my course, I stumbled across various photographers pages and groups with 365-Day Photo Projects, each posting a photo a day online. I thought I would have a go at doing this myself as I find it hard to strike a balance between either taking far too many photos or struggling … Continue reading New Project – 365 Day Photo Challenge
Halloween Pumpkin Carving Unfortunately due to a busy couple of weeks with other commitments, I have not made as much progress with the owl pyrography as I would have liked...though I did find the time this evening to join my housemate in some Hallowe'en pumpkin carving! I carved an owl into mine, while Jon carved … Continue reading Hallowe’en and Owl Pyrography…
Suffolk Owl Sanctuary I visited Suffolk Owl Sanctuary again this month, with the aim of getting a few more photos for my portfolio and generally for inspiration - this time I was focussing more on the vibrant autumnal colours. This time I took my Samsung Gx-1L, and a Nikon D7000 along with me - and … Continue reading More Owls, Squirrels and Meerkats…
This week I started a new pyrography challenge, working on a 37x37cm plywood sheet, with the aim of reproducing a photograph of an owl I took at Suffolk Owl Santuary in August this year (shown in one of the photos). More pictures will be uploaded as it progresses!
Finally got around to uploading a few pictures from a visit to Dartmoor Zoo in August... These were again taken with my Samsung Gx-1L. The zoo itself was a lovely place to wander around, even though it very much looked like a work in progress, with quite a lot of enclosures and features under development. … Continue reading Dartmoor Zoo
In August I went to look at two exhibitions that were on display at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich.
The exhibition of Paris consisted of a collection of 81 photographs taken between 1929 and 1985, and for me was a fascinating example of street photography. Having not previously seen so many examples of Cartier-Bresson’s work in one place, I enjoyed looking at the range of photographs of daily life around the city of Paris.
Cartier-Bresson’s development of the term ‘decisive moment’, and of ‘sketching’, is something that has influenced modern photography. The idea that the photographer has that split second to capture an image, such as movement or a significant moment in time, is something that is more attainable with modern technology, such as camera phones, or compact cameras.
