I've been doing quite a bit of work lately in colour, so thought I would mix it up a bit and do some line drawing for a change! I used a drawing pen and Windsor and Newton black ink on Bristol Board, and worked from a combination of rough sketches and photos taken on my … Continue reading Townscapes in Pen
It's been a while since I've been out and about with my camera, so on Saturday I visited Welney Wetland Centre in East Anglia. It was a lovely mild autumnal day - perfect for a walk! As well as a huge number of swans, geese and ducks, I was lucky enough to see a heron … Continue reading Wildlife at Welney Wetland Centre
I created this using a mix of conté crayons and soft pastels on 10x12" black sugar paper. Although this has been drawn on black sugar paper, I have blended a layer of black pastel in the background which I hope will protect the paper against fading. This started as a sketch for a bit of fun, but I ended up rediscovering the joy of drawing with a simple ball point pen! Reference photo © C L Grasby, taken at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary in 2016.
I started this portrait of a red panda at a workshop in North Walsham. I enjoy attending workshops where I can, as it's a lovely way to meet other artists and socialise with a coffee while being creative! I worked from my own reference photo, that I'd taken at Colchester Zoo earlier this year. … Continue reading Red Panda, Pastels
Last weekend I gave my old Samsung GX-1L DSLR camera to my sister, and then had a day out at Colchester Zoo. We spent quite a lot of time photographing various animals and dodging heavy rain showers - thankfully there are plenty of undercover places to shelter! It also gave me and Alison chance to … Continue reading Colchester Zoo
My main focus for this pastel painting was the vibrant colours in the sunset - I wanted the reflected light in the scene to stand out more than the location itself, so only included a limited amount of detail. I worked from a reference photo I'd taken a few years ago in Oulton Broad on … Continue reading Broads Sunset
Another visit to Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, this time with my sister and friend, to celebrate her birthday with a Meerkat Experience. This encounter involved getting up very close with a mob of meerkats in their enclosure - some even climbed on top of us! As I joined Alison for the experience, Jon took photos … Continue reading Meerkat Encounter at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary
Last year I had my first attempt at photographing wild hares in Norfolk. After a day of driving around the countryside roads with my friend, eventually finding and photographing a few hares frolicking in a field near Hunstanton provided me with a real sense of achievment! Working with my old Samsung DSLR camera, and a … Continue reading Wild Hares in Norfolk
Making the most of the very rare opportunity of a sunny and mild Bank Holiday Monday, I visited Suffolk Owl Sanctuary for the first time this year. As I had already visited the Sanctuary a couple of times last year, I had an idea of what birds they had, and where they flew them. This … Continue reading Suffolk Owl Sanctuary
